Are you too surfing on the new Zero Waste wave? Famous in your kitchen, do not forget to also apply it to your skincare and beauty routine! Lately, a lot of cosmetics and beauty products are adopting this method: plastic and packaging-free, recyclable and reusable. Let me show you a few tricks to have an entire zero waste beauty routine, which products are essential (oils, body butter…), and take care of yourself as well as the planet and the environment!
What is “zero waste”?
Going zero waste means reducing or completely eliminating packages from your life. It is necessary to change all single-use products into reusable ones, make your own products, and also to reuse jars or bottles. Glass is by far the best material for your health and for the planet. Furthermore, it is 100% recyclable. You will learn a lot on this website.
What to have in a zero-waste bathroom?
There are a few products essentials in a zero-waste bathroom, such as :
- A bamboo toothbrush and hairbrush or comb
- Solid soap, shampoo, conditioner
- Solid toothpaste and deodorant
- Reusable cotton swab and face cloths
- Reusable menstrual pads or cups
- For cosmetics: body oils, aloe vera gel, solid lip balm
- Coconut oil, shea butter, apple cider vinegar…
- Reusable razor or wax
The list can go on and on, but it is pretty much a good beginning if you have all these products.
It is not more expensive
Of course, you need quite a budget if you are just starting and have to buy everything. But with time, you will realize that you are actually saving a lot of money! By reusing the same products countless times, you drastically reduce your beauty care budget. Out of the bathroom, being zero waste also means buying second hand, lending, fixing… instead of buying new stuff every time. Check out our article on how to upcycle your old clothes!
It is easy to find all the products
You probably wonder where to find all of this? Nowadays, it is very easy. Loads of shops are now dedicated to zero waste. Besides, they often offer organic and locally made products. You can also find everything on the internet, although for obvious ethical reasons it is better to avoid. Or even just browsing in your favorite supermarket!
Bonus: our zero-waste deodorant recipe
It is a very easy recipe. You only need 3 common ingredients: coconut oil, corn starch, and thin sodium bicarbonate (they are in everyone’s kitchen). Firstly, melt two tablespoons of coconut oil in the microwave. Transfer it to a small glass jar and add one tablespoon of corn starch and one of sodium bicarbonate. Stir well to combine. Allow it to cool down in the fridge. Once the mixture is solid enough, it is ready to use! You can keep it at room temperature, in your bathroom for example. To use it, simply take a pea-size portion with your index and spread it onto your armpit.
You’re just a step away from being zero waste! And remember, what matters is to try your best, you do not have to be irreproachable from the first day.
